Please Read Before Buying Another Diet Soda

diet soda

Hi there my beautiful lovelies! Hope you guys are doing well and staying safe. Today, I will talk to you about diet soda. In today’s society, the beverage industries are making billions selling their unhealthy, sugary drinks to our children and the mass population. Whether it’s at work, school, colleges, or even stores and malls it is not very hard to locate a vending machine dispensing these unhealthy items to the people. Many have switched to the diet versions for a sugar-free treat. However, are the sugar-free versions any better?

Soda and Obesity:

Soda has a detrimental effect on our health. It has been well established that soda and other sugary beverages are linked to obesity. Moreover, there is increased chances of tooth decay, a higher risk of heart disease, and metabolic disorders like type 2 diabetes. Today, more than 39.8% of adults and 18.5% of children and young adults are obese in the United States. We are living in a country where more than two-thirds of the nation is overweight.

Health Care and Economic Impact of Obesity:

In the United States, the debate about universal healthcare is a polarizing subject. Before we can think about universal healthcare, we need to trim waste, redundancies, and other issues associated with increased healthcare spending. Conditions, such as obesity, play a huge role in the total healthcare spending and the GDP of this nation.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the annual cost of obesity-related illness in the country is about $109.2 billion or almost 21% of the annual medical spending in the US. Additionally, In the U.S., workers who are obese and have other chronic conditions miss about 450 million additional days of work compared to healthy workers. This leads to $153 billion in lost productivity each year. If we can address the epidemic of obesity, imagine the saving in both healthcare and the economy that can be accomplished, which can then be applied to universal healthcare, social security, or medicare.

Diet Soda:

The diet soda industry has become very popular with the increasing awareness of the effect of the sugary version on obesity and other related chronic health conditions. Diet Coke has been a consumer favorite since its introduction in 1982, launched after a lengthy period of product development. Since then, the sugar-fee soda has earned legions of fans. Despite its ubiquity in the marketplace, how much do those who drink it really know about the effects of diet soda?

The Health Impact of Diet Soda:

According to an article in The Sun, Diet Coke has its own distinctive flavor that is quite different from Coca-Cola. Coke Zero Sugar, on the other hand, is meant to mimic the taste of the original Coca-Cola, just without all that pesky sugar. Yet when it comes to the actual ingredients, what goes into making the two sodas is pretty much identical, save for one key difference: Coke Zero Sugar contains a chemical called sodium citrate, while Diet Coke contains citric acid.

Now that we have learned about the difference between the two of the soda, then look at the impact diet soda has on our health. Since childhood, everyone has heard warnings from parents and dentists that sugar will rot teeth. This is in fact the case. So, shouldn’t diet soda be less harmful? You will be surprised by the answer.

Research:

Impact on Tooth:

A 2015 research study undertaken by the University of Melbourne’s Oral Health Cooperative Research Centre exposed human molars to 15 different beverages, including milk, sports drink, sugar-sweetened sodas, and three different sugar-free sodas. Surprisingly, the study found that sugar-free soda and sugary soda were both equally bad for tooth enamel.

Diet Soda and It’s Impact on Weight:

Additionally, given that the word “diet” is right there in the name of Diet Soda, it would be easy to assume that drinking diet sodas would be better for one’s waistline than the regular sugar-laden version. Not only is that not the case, but a research study indicated that drinking diet soda can actually lead to weight gain, not weight loss, particularly in older consumers.

A 2015 study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society drew a direct link between diet sodas such as Diet Coke and obesity in people aged 65 and older. The study monitored 749 subjects and found that those who drank diet soda demonstrated an increase in waist circumference that was nearly three times that of those who didn’t drink diet soda. University of Texas researcher Sharon Fowler, lead author of the study, determined that “increasing diet soda intake was associated with escalating abdominal obesity, which may increase cardiometabolic risk in older adults.”

Furthermore, according to a press release for the 2016 study by the University of Sydney in Australia, which was published in the Cell Metabolism journal, researchers confirmed that diet soda actually makes those who drink it feel hungrier. As a result, those who drink artificially sweetened soda such as Diet Coke will ultimately eat more than they would if they were drinking a sugar-sweetened beverage.

Finally, a recent study published last year has determined that diet drinks aren’t quite as harmless as consumers might previously have thought. According to the American Heart Association’s findings, drinking two or more diet drinks a day has shown a link to a higher risk of stroke in women over the age of 50.

Diet soda tricks our brain to start a metabolic process for sugar that isn’t there. The problem is when the body doesn’t get what it’s expecting, it becomes confused about how to respond. In essence, our pancreas produces insulin to deal with anticipated sugar. But when no sugar arrives, the metabolic process is disrupted. As a result, when we actually do consume sugar, your body isn’t sure what to do. It’s been fooled too many times. Consequently, over time this disruption can lead to obesity, diabetes, and a host of health problems.

In the AHA study, researchers analyzed data on 81,714 postmenopausal women between the ages of 50 and 79. The study had an average follow-up time of nearly 12 years. Researchers found that women who reported drinking more than one diet soda or other artificially sweetened drinks a day had a higher risk of stroke caused by a blood clot. The association between diet drinks and stroke risk was even stronger in African-American women.

In fact, compared with women in the study who consumed diet drinks less than once a week or not at all, women who consumed two or more per day were:

  • 23 percent more likely to have a stroke.
  • 31 percent more likely to have a clot-caused (ischemic) stroke.
  • 29 percent more likely to develop heart disease (fatal or non-fatal heart attack).
  • 16 percent more likely to die from any cause.

Additionally, women who drank two or more artificially sweetened beverages a day but had no history of heart disease or diabetes were 2.44 times more likely to have a stroke caused by blood clots than those who didn’t. That disparity rose to 3.93 times in African-American women.

My dear lovelies! Before, you go out to buy another diet drink think about the study above. I for one have seen the impact of diet soda in the life of a loved one, who recently had a stroke and needed to be hospitalized, with a history of high diabetes and blood pressure, and kidney disease.

I am all for universal health and managing healthcare waste. I am an Epidemiologist and this is what I do. I listen to the data, not just the hypothesis. I am not saying stop consuming right now. The key here is moderation. Sure, it’s not the fun answer, but we just need to be smart about how much of anything we eat or drink. After all, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Living Intentionally

Living Intentionally For a Better and Fulfilling Life

Hi there my beautiful lovelies! Today I will share will something that has helped me so much in every part of my life. It is called living intentionally.

Living Intentionally

What is living intentionally mean?

“Intentional living means understanding your fundamental beliefs and values, and then actively living your life in line with those values.” Intentional living isn’t a one-time choice. Literally, every decision you make should be made intentionally. You should always be searching out your goals, values, and passions.

What does living intentionally looks like in our daily life?

Intentional living is like taking charge of your finances and being responsible. In terms of everyday life, intentional living is taking charge of your finances and being responsible. You are living intentionally when you pick up good habits that will help you to live a life of meaning. It’s like changing your entire lifestyle. Finally, intentional living starts at the very basic. Since it is about making every decision based on our values, everyone’s intentional lives are unique to themselves.

How to live intentionally?

In order to start intentionally, you need to start at the very basics. Sit down with a pen and paper and write down your core values. Then on every step that you take, for every action make sure that you are upholding those values. Not sure what those core values are? That’s okay. Just be warned, intentional living requires a lot of deep thinking (especially when discovering your values). But if you can make it through that part, you’re off to a great start. Meditation can help you become self-aware.

According to Scott Jeffrey, a career and life coach, identifying core values begins by reflecting on meaningful moments, times of limitation, and necessities in your everyday life. He suggests asking yourself questions and zeroing in on peak experiences in your life, as well as the moments when you felt the need to suppress feelings, and the things which fill you up each day.

The Steps for living intentionally – Begin by Laying The Foundation:

Firstly, in order to live intentionally, remember that every morning is a new day full of decisions and opportunities. You get to pick your attitude and your decisions. You don’t have to let the circumstances of your past negatively determine the pattern of your life in the future. You have a choice in the matter. You do not need to be stuck in the same pattern of living that you have been for years. Just realize that every morning is a new opportunity.

Secondly, life is can’t be lived in a vacuum. It is lived surrounded by a culture that is moving somewhere. Living with intention will require you to take a step back and evaluate the flow of the stream to determine where it is headed, how it is affecting you, and if it is taking you in a direction you desire.

Finally, know who you are. Get a strong handle on your passions, talents, abilities, and weaknesses. Give precious time and energy to this endeavor. It is one of the most valuable things you can do.

Take Steps Towards a More Intentional Living:

The first to living intentionally, stope comparing your lives with others. You were not born to live their life. There is no sense in wasting yours being jealous of theirs. Instead, you were born to live your life – determine today to be good at it. After all, you only get one shot.

Next, identify what you want your life to communicate and contribute. Find a passion to live for that is bigger than yourself. Write it down. It will bring new meaning to your life. It will wake you from the slow death of only living for yourself.

Third, set goals for yourself. Goals move us and goals shape us. Set goals that are directly in line with your defined purpose and core values. By their very nature, they will introduce intentionality into your life.

Our values are our “North Star,” the guiding light in our lives. We can easily become overwhelmed by the pressures of society, the comparison trap, and other forms of shame—this is when we have to identify our values. When we’re able to unpack what really makes us tick, versus what we think should be motivating us, we discover that we don’t need to play by anyone else’s rules.

Fourth, stay focused on your goals and core values. We live in a world of constant connectivity and distraction that is begging for our attention nearly every moment of the day. Learn to turn off the distraction and live your life instead. Turn off the tv and don’t read gossip magazines. Remove nonessential physical belongings that are robbing you of time and energy that could be better spent living with intention. Mine is living in the moment and I take each step keeping that in mind.

Finally, learn from others. Successful people are curious people. They possess the humility to learn from others. Identify people accomplishing your purpose and goals. Then, study them and learn from them.

My dear lovelies! What is your opinion about living intentionally? Do strive to live intentionally? What do you do in order to practice of living intentionally? Please comment below.

Part Two of 7 Chakra Series – Sacral Chakra or Svadhisthana

Sacral Chakra:

The second chakra or the Sacral Chakra is located just above the pubic bone and is responsible for passion, sexuality, intimacy, money, creativity, and joy. The balance of the Sacral Chakra allows us to improve our relationships with ourselves and others. It is associated with the water element and is characterized by movement and flow in our emotions and thoughts. It also supports personal expansion and the formation of identity through relating to others and to the world.

Color of Sacral Chakra:

The sacral chakra is most commonly represented with the color orange. However, since it’s associated with the element of water, it could also take the color of very light blue or white on more rare occasions. The orange of the second chakra is translucent and has a transparent quality.

The Shakti Mudra:

This feminine mudra for the sacral chakra works to harness sexuality and sensuality.  With your palms in front of your chest, press your pinky and ring fingertips together. Fold your thumbs into your palms, inside of your index and middle finger.

Mantra – VAM:

Vam is the bija, or seed, sound of the sacral chakra. When chanting the mantra, vam, the power of the sound vibrations is believed to cleanse this chakra, which is the energy center of creativity, pleasure, and sexuality.

12931900 – the sacral chakra

Yogis chant vam to heal the sacral center physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Mantras, particularly single-syllable bija mantras, are usually chanted for their healing sound vibrations, rather than any specific meaning. Chakra mantras like vam are thought to clear the subtle energy pathways in the body in order to create positive change.

Quote of the Day – Use What Talent You Possess

Inspirational Quote of the Day

Hi there my beautiful lovelies hope you are doing well and staying safe. Today I will share with the inspirational quote of the day – Quote of the Day – Use What Talent You Possess

Inspirational Quote of the Day

I found this quote very interesting. In our lives, we had to second guess ourselves a lot. I know that I for one, would constantly tell myself, may be I am not good enough to do this. As the woods would be silent if only the best singing birds sang, same way, this universe would be silent if we left it for the best. Each of us has a roll to play in this universe. We are just part of a big picture. In genetics variation give rise to viability. Same way, in this universe variation in talent gives rise to a beautiful viable place to thrive in. Let us not get discouraged by our ability to do something. Let us thrive because of our differences. Together we make this world and life beautiful.

My dear lovelies! I would love to hear what you think about this quote? How would you interpret it? Please leave your response in the comment below. I look forward to hearing your perspectives.

A Day in the Life of an Adult Living with ADHD – forever NIJ

A day in the life of an adult living with ADHD – forever NIJ

ADHD:

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder or ADHD is a Mental Health disorder affecting 6% of adults in the United States. Though it’s mostly common among children, adults too are affected by the disorder. I am one of those adults living with ADHD. I have been living with the disease all my life but as an adult, it can be quite difficult since more responsibilities are part of adult life. Additionally, I have insomnia and generalized anxiety disorder. I for one, have to live every day making sure that I am on track and don’t become sidetracked.

A typical day in my life begins around the same time 3:30 a.m. I wake up even earlier sometimes. Being an insomniac can do that sometimes. If I get 4-5 hours of sleep, then that is a very good day. I get ready and check my google calendar to check if I need to take care of something before leaving for work. Google calendar is my best friend. It keeps me on track. If I need to take something to work, it’s in the google calendar. I leave for work before 4:30 am because the roads are more empty during that time. Driving can be very difficult with ADHD. My mind cannot go to la-la land while driving. I make sure to keep my sit upright so that I don’t take too comfortable. I don’t turn on the radio and my both hands are on the wheel. Most of all, my eyes are on the road all the time at all times. I keep talking to myself to keep me alert. I make sure I don’t go over the speed limit. It was hard in the beginning but I know it has become a part of my life. If I have a passenger with me, that person’s job would be to help me stay alert and not get distracted.

When I am at work I have a list with priorities for that day, things to be done, and deadlines for projects. Additionally, I don’t have any other unnecessary browsers open, because before I know it one extra browser becomes 10 extra browsers. Hence, I don’t open any extra browser. My list keeps organized and on track which does not easy for me. My work is important to me and making careless mistakes is not acceptable. Looking through the list and double and triple-checking my works helps. I also take 5 minutes at work to do a guided meditation. Meditation not only helps me to be mindful but also keeps me grounded and be in the present, an important skill to have for someone whose mind often drifts into la-la land. I don’t need to have too much interaction, especially now, which is a blessing in disguise because it can be so exhausting to interact with others and try my best every moment to make sure I don’t speak out of turn or interrupt a conversation. My current communications are mostly in writing, which helps me take a deep breath and keep my thoughts focused and organized.

When I go home, the first thing I do includes at least another 5 minutes of guided meditation. That helps me unwind and relax after stressful days. Face it, trying to keep my interaction professional and working constantly to make sure that my life does not get out of control, is so stressful and exhausting. Guided meditation after work helps me unwind. Moreover, it allows me to have compassion and love for myself. It helps me to recognize my extreme emotions without any judgment and move on. Thanks to guided meditation, now I am more compassionate towards myself than ever before. I only watch the weather in the news because, in the current state of affairs, all other stories are very distracting and exhausting. I have Alexa give me the most important headlines of the day. This is I can be informed about the important news of the day, and fill any gap if needed. I even have a calendar reminder to set aside some times every day for my blog and other social media sites.

Nevertheless, after an exhausting weekend, I leave the weekend to my ADHD run free. This is the time when drifting to la-la land is encouraged not condoned. I called that side my creative side that does not abide by any rules or routine. This can a great tool for painting, and that is how I outlet my free spirit. Without that, I would suffocate and break down. The phrase, “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” is true in my life. Thanks to the weekend, I have dedicated times when I am free and can be just me. I roam free full, and not care about any disorganization, and clutter. Everything I do during the two days at the end of the week is to keep my free spirit be free and full of creativity. I may not complete every project I take on, but I know that if nothing, my freedom-loving self is satisfied and will keep me moving. As my favorite poet, Robert Frost said, “And miles to go before I sleep. And miles to go before I sleep.”

In conclusion, ADHD may be a hard mental health diagnosis to live with as an adult, but having that diagnosis has helped me to have more compassion and forgiveness towards me in my life. Additionally, letting my free spirit to roam free, allows me to be more productive at work and be the true and strong version. ADHD is part of me and it helped me to be aware of myself more. It has opened up my creative side and let it roam free, full of compassion and mindful awareness. I may fail at being society’s definition of being normal, but who I am is more open to keeping my creative side free and being able to live life with mindful awareness.

Another Poem By Sarnina – Five

Hi, there my lovelies! Hope you all are doing well and staying safe. Today I want to share with you another poem by my sister, Sarnina. As I have mentioned in the previous posts, my sister and I are both tied by mental health problems. She suffers from depression. Her battle with depression has made it harder for her to open up with others. She uses poetry to express her feeling.

Darkness

I hope you can connect with my sister through her poem. As you can see in her poem, my sister pours her heart out into her poems. She connects to her feelings through her poems. I love to hear your feedback about her poem.

Alopecia

My Continued Long Battle With Androgenic Alopecia and Where I Am Today After 3 Years

Hi, there my loveliness! I hope you are doing well and staying safe. Today I want to talk about my continued long battle with an androgenic journey with alopecia and where I am today. If you have been following my blog, you already know that in 2017, I was diagnosed with androgenic alopecia. It’s a pattern of hair loss that affects both men and women.

In women, the hair becomes thin all over the place, and the hairline does not recede. This condition in women rarely leads to total baldness. Never did I thought that I will have androgenic alopecia. I have received overwhelming response and support. Hence, I wanted to update you about my journey three years later.

hair10a

Beginning of my long battle with alopecia

Growing up in a society where women’s hair is part of my beauty, sudden loss of hair was a sudden psychological shock to me. I was depressed. I did not want to talk to anyone. I was hiding my head.  I remember taking the above picture reviewing a picture. Even then, I had a head full of hair.

However, suddenly in September last year, I started to lose my hair like crazy. I have my typical hair loss each day but this was drastic. I started photographing it. Within a month I lost two-thirds of my hair. I didn’t know what to do I went to my dermatologist who did a biopsy and diagnosed me with androgenic alopecia. She told me that there is no cure for this disease when using combination treatment, I will get some but not all of my hair back. Typical treatments for this condition include.

rogaine

Rogaine or Minoxidil was approved by the US Federal Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of androgenic alopecia. The study is currently being marketed over the counter as 2% and 5% solution, with 5% being solution being more effective.

In addition, oral treatment such as Finasteride, or Spironolactone is so prescribed alongside rogaine. Finasteride is prescribed only in men because it can produce ambiguous genitalia in a developing male fetus. Since Spironolactone is an antiandrogen, it can cause the feminization of male fetuses. Hence it should not be taken during pregnancy.

irestore

I was in emotional pain. I was put on Rogaine, antiandrogen, an antifungal shampoo, ketoconazole 2%, which has shown to effectively treat in regrowth hair.  My dear friends, at this point I was desperate to do anything. I was doing research on any treatment. My dermatologist saw how depressed I became. She told me that can lead to more hair loss.

She also mentioned to me that I should also look into buying a laser helmet, which has shown to regrow hair by 43%. Based on my doctor’s recommendations, I bought irestore. This FDA-cleared, low-level laser therapy is a clinically proven way to stimulate hair follicles to grow thicker and fuller hair. It uses clinical-strength laser technology to treat balding, thinning hair, and receding hairline. I use it for 25 minutes every other day.

During my long battle, I was along taking hair vitamin with 5000mg every day. I had been following these treatment regimens for a while. I have seen some improvements for sure after 3 to four months. I never thought I will have to deal with this before the mid-30s and definitely did not expect such a long battle with alopecia.

Where I am Today After 3 Years:

Long Battle With Alopecia

My lovely readers! I have gone a rough patch, and have come a long way. During the long battle with alopecia the past three years, I have switched from Rogaine to my mom’s natural recipe of onion juice, organic coconut, avocado, castor, and almond oils (used weekly). I still take Spironolactone and Vitamin with Biotin and B12 every day. I no longer use my mom’s recipe and use irestore once a week, though I plan to make it more regularly now.

My dear lovelies! I have gained half of my hair back and don’t have any bald spots. My hair is no longer my cause of depression. I have learned to accept the improvement I have gracefully. At least I am 50% better than I was before. I am okay with that. I will take my current hair over large bald spots and very little hair anytime. I feel beautiful again.

It’s amazing how appears can do things to our mind. I guess I am part of the norm. One thing I have learned that it a great thing to feel beautiful what we feel about ourselves can have a strong effect on our mental status. I longer feel ashamed of my hair. To be honest, I think I have grown a lot as a person. Though I would not go back to my balding self, I will not treat me the same way as I did when I first was diagnosed with alopecia. Thanks to mindful based meditation I have learned to accept and appreciate myself. I have learned to be more compassionate towards myself.

My beautiful lovelies! Have any of experienced what I have or know someone? I would love to hear your story and what treatment has worked for you or your friend.

Hope you enjoy this post and as much as I love writing it. Don’t forget to check out my Facebook Page and follow me on Instagram @forevernij. Are you on Bloglovin? My Latest Beauty Finds at Mac Cosmetics

Hi there my beautiful lovelies! Hope you all are doing well and staying safe. Today I will share with you my latest beauty finds at Mac Cosmetics. I love the products from Mac Cosmetics.

To be honest, when I first started buying makeup products years ago, I first started at Mac Cosmetics. I love their products but it was hard for a novice makeup person to find her way through Mac. It was hard for me to navigate through the vast collection at Mac. The only item I absolutely loved is their lipsticks. At Sephora, I had someone color match the products to my skin tone, and learn the basics of makeup and beauty products. Once I learned about my skin tone and type along with my products suited to my skin tone and type, I was able to use that to buy more beauty products at Mac Cosmetics.

After a long time, I finally did a small shopping spree (with cash of course) at Mac Cosmetics. I got the following items: Mac Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation, Mac Studio Fix Perfecting Powder, Powder Kiss Liquid LipColour in Got A Callback, and Powder Kiss Liquid LipColour in Over The Taupe.

Mac Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation ($33)

It is a one-step pressed powder and foundation that gives skin a 12-hour ultra-matte finish while controlling shine and without causing acne. It does not look cakey at all. I give a light no-makeup makeup look. This foundation gives skin a smooth and even ultra-matte finish with medium-to-full buildable coverage, with a velvety texture that allows the skin to breathe. M∙A∙C Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation is long-wearing, color-true, non-caking, non-streaking, and non-settling – all for 12 hours.

Mac Studio Fix Perfecting Powder ($29)

A pro-quality, refined loose powder to set makeup with a matte finish. Infused with nourishing ingredients, it wears comfortably without feeling drying. With sheer coverage, M∙A∙C Studio Fix Perfecting Powder is a universal makeup must for beginners and buffs alike.

Powder Kiss Liquid LipColour in Got A Callback ($24)

This is a liquid lipcolour with a whipped, mousse-like texture that delivers soft-focus moisture-matte, comfortable color with ten hours of hydration. I love the way the color looks on my skin tone. The special blend of vitamin E, powders, and emollient properties provides excellent cushion, flexibility, wear, and moisture that will leave lips looking and feeling soft and smooth all day.

Powder Kiss Liquid LipColour in Over The Taupe ($24)

This is a nude tone. I love the color. I love wearing nude colors at work on a regular basis. I again love the way it looks on my skin tone. and the soft, hydrating, and yet matte lip color.

Verdict: Overall, I love each of the products that I got at Mac. Through items, Mac does live up to its reputation as a provider of quality beauty products. While trying these items, I went back to my regular trip to the Mac Store in Union Station in Washington D.C. I love the interactions, the quality you never get online.

My dear lovelies! I hope you enjoy the post as much as I loved sharing it. Please let me know about your favorite products at Mac Cosmetics.

How to Flatten the Mommy Tummy With Just One 10-Minutes Exercise A Day.

Hi there my  beautiful lovelies! Hope you are doing well and staying safe. This post is for all my lovelies with newborn. Fourteen percent of mothers suffer from abdominal separation or diastasis recti. Today, i will share with you a exercise that I found in NPR to lose 2 inches of your waist in just three weeks with just 10 minutes exercise a day.

All you have to do is sit on the floor cross legged. Relax the shoulders. We will do this with a sense of compassion towards ourselves without any form of judgement. Put your hands on your belly. Once ready take a deep breath as you inhale let the belly fully expand. Now as you exhale, suck your belly buttons back as far as you can, all the way back to the spine. Now hold in this position. While in this position, take little tiny breaths, and when exhale during the tiny breaths, you squeeze your tummy tighter and tighter. With each tiny breath, pull your belly buttons back as further and further into the spine. Very small, very intense, very tight squeeze.  Do this for ten minutes.

Do this ten minutes exercise everyday, and watch your waste get two inches smaller in three weeks.
