My Roller Coaster Journey With Chronic Migraine

Vvzt00O

Hi there my lovelies! Hope you all are doing well and staying safe. I wonder if I ask you to virtually raise your hand if you have/are suffering from chronic migraine. A lot, I guess. I am rising my as well. However, my relationship with migraine has been a wavy one, full of ups and downs. I involved all stages of grief. Now, I have learned to leave with it. However, does it have to be like this? Why do I have to learn to live with migraine, and make it a part of my daily life?

tenor (1)

I have been suffering from chronic headache since I can remember. However, if you are a desi person, (someone from the South Asian background), you know that chronic headache is only seen as an excuse to get out of school or doing homework. I always heard nice try, you still have to do your homework and go to school. Hence, began my daily struggle to live my life without the support I needed. To be honest, it was the 80s and 90s and there were not much awareness about chronic migraine in my culture.

giphy

When I went to high school, my struggle increased, I guess triggered by the chronic stress of adolescent high school life. My pediatrician gave me Tylenol and Naproxen to take, though my stomach did not agree with that choice. Imagine constantly going to the nurse’s office either because of chronic headaches and cramps. My life became a prisoner of chronic pain. I was finally diagnosed with tension headache and was just told to use painkiller, and that was the beginning of my struggle with gastroenterological reflux disease or GERD.

A-Woman-Having-Migraine-Trying-to-Sleep-Animation-1

In college, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, I know one more pain diagnosis. I was put on muscle relaxant and anti anxiety medication for my anxiety, along with painkiller for my headaches and cramp. I remember, I was always told when the doctors can’t come up with anything they give it the name fibromyalgia. Being in my early 20s, I was keen to what other people’s opinion, and I decided to go off my medications. Yes, I was non-compliant with my treatment because I did not want to be called a hypochondriac. I did not want that extra attention.

033018-migraine-brain-lead

In my late 20s, after decades of struggle, I was finally referred to a neurologist, who ordered a MRI exam. At that time, I was more naive and did not disagree with the neurologist’s decision. The present me would have said no, because my current self do not believe in low-value care,  “[s]ervices that provide little or no benefit to patients, have potential to cause harm, incur unnecessary cost to patients, or waste limited healthcare resources,” and contributes to over $345 billion annually in wasteful health spending in the United States (stay tuned for more on this). Long story short, I had my very first MIR exam, with a somewhat false positive result.

Brainwaves-firing-neurons

The very first MRI of my life showed a possible Chiari Malformation, in which brain tissue extends into your spinal canal. It occurs when part of your skull is abnormally small or misshapen, pressing on your brain and forcing it downward. Well, imagine the reaction from my desi parents and family. I started getting all these visits from my aunts, uncle, all worried. My dear lovelies, I love my extended family who are very supportive and caring, but imagine my mindset at that time. Being in public health, I naturally had to go online to PubMed, a National Institute of Health website with peer-reviewed articles. With anxiety, chronic pain, and everything going on at that time, I was dealing with the possibility of a brain decompression surgery.

pexels-photo-3881429

I had to go through another more detailed MRI, which showed that my tissue did extend into spinal canal but it was borderline. I did not have Chiari Malformation, and I did not need a brain surgery. The moral of that short story is that low-value care only leads to unnecessary treatment, the potential for harm (mental harm in my case) and wasted healthcare spending. I was put on medications, Topamax (the zombie drug), more muscle relaxant.

pexels-photo-3808057

My dear lovelies, after few years of treatment, no relief and struggling with constant brain fog, I had a new neurologist, my current one. He took me out of the zombie drug, put me on Botox treatment every 12 weeks for chronic migraine along with monthly anti-CRP medication known as Emgality. It is a new class of medication approved as a monthly subcutaneous treatment (or self-injection) for the prevention of medication. Here I am today, getting Botox, monthly injections for my chronic migraine and am still suffering from migraine. My migraine has landed me to the emergency room, and urgent care, and even hospitalization several times. My hair has a life of it own, very painful t touch or brushing.

giphy3

Nevertheless, I am in peace with my life now but I will not stop fighting. Chronic pain cannot take me down. As I have mentioned before, I am in a state of zen, I am not done though, I will continue to find the relief I seek. At this point, I am looking into eastern medicine for relief. I am thinking of acupuncture treatment for relief from chronic migraine. Mindfulness meditation and deep breathing have helped me reach my zenful self. Eastern medicine so far has given me the mental strength to face my struggle, acknowledge it and peacefully continue my search.

tenor

My lovelies! Have you struggled with chronic migraine? How has it affected your daily life? What worked for you and what did not? Have you used acupuncture for chronic pain, and if yes, has it work for you? I would love to hear about your experience, good or bad. Once I go through acupuncture, I will update you on my progress.

a-moment-of-zen

I may be in more pain than ever before, but I am in better mental state. I am in a place more grounded and centered. What a difference that makes! My mental peace has made a huge difference in my mind, but I have not given up. I will continue to find the relief I need for more migraine free days. As my favorite poet Robert Frost said, “and miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep”. Hope your life if filled with good health, zen, and love. Please stay safe and health.

Everlasting Comfort Blanket

Hi there my beautiful lovelies! I hope you are doing well. Today I share with another Amazon find of mine. Before I do anything else, I want to give a full disclosure. I received this item for free to give my honest opinion. It is the Everlasting Comfort Blanket.

I have always had doubts about faux fur due to lint issues. When I received this blanket I had the same concern. However, I was amazed by how soft the blanket was. The beautiful blue town this blanket makes it look rick and luxurious. It feels so soft and luxurious, compared to the price of $29.95. In order to test my lint concern, I left the blanket on my ottoman bench for a whole day to test my concern.

I was surprised to see no lint at the end of the day. I am so glad that there were no lint fallout out because I actually loved this blanket. It is so soft and luxurious. It look more expensive than it is. It feels so comfortable. It fulfills it’s name complete. Every time I am using the blanket, I get an everlasting blanket. I got so many complements on this blanket.

In conclusion, I would give this blanket five stars. I do see myself pay for this blanket in the future. If you want to try out this blanket, you can receive 20% discount please click on the link and use the promo code allaboutme3181. For the direct link to the blanket please click here.

COVID-19 Update

0304_n13_covid_19_coronavirus_graphic_generic_file

Hi there my beautiful lovelies! Hope you all are doing well and staying safe. Today I will give a short update on the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Johns Hopkins’s University, 19.5 million people has been infected with this corona virus globally, of whom 723,693 have succumbed to the virus.

propagación-coronavirus-covid-19-América-Latina-Caribe-Europa

In the United States alone, close to 5 million people have been infected with COVID-19, and over 160,000 people has died. There are people who question mask use and its efficacy, but the science is clear. Mask will protect you and your loved ones from contracting and dying from COVID-19. It is the seat-belt of your life.

covid-19_coronavirus_network_of_vectors_by_da-kuk_gettyimages-1213355637_2400x1600-100837132-large

New projection data suggest that as much as 300,000 people will die from COVID-19 by the end of the year. Imagine this, those 300,000 are someone wives, husbands, partners, siblings, children, parents, grandparents, grandchildren. Imagine your loved ones among those. I know it is extremely hard to imagine. Even has a public health professional it is hard for me to think that way.

However, my dear lovelies! This can happen and has happened to me. Not too long ago, my aunt was diagnosed with COVID-19, along with my pregnant cousins, my toddler niece. Those my cousins, and niece has been lucky to only have minor symptoms, my aunt with many pre-existing conditions, landed in the ICU. Now imagine, you are suffering from COVID-19, unable to breath and all hospitals are rejecting to admit you. This is exactly what’s happening in Bangladesh. People are being turned away because of the fear of transmission of the virus and left to die without treatment. Only the privileged few get the treatment because they have the political and economical power. How do I know? I have family members in Bangladesh, both in privileged and unprivileged category. My aunt was among those privileged who got added to ICU and put on ventilator for two months. She survived and is very weak, dependent on oxygen for breathing.

200807_ns_covid19_web_log_1x

My dear lovelies! New studies have shown that if we all just wear our mask, we can save 70,000 people from dying from COVID-19. Yes, I am saying 70,000 people. That’s 70,000 parents, children, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, spouses, partner, loved ones. If you had the power of saying 70,000 lives wouldn’t you do that? We all have our freedom, but freedom that lead to the mass death of people is not freedom, it’s negligence. If we all just use our will power, to accept the situation and follow the public health measures to protect and save lives.

I will end with one thing. Please wear mask and social distance. COVID-19 is not being over-exaggerated for political reason, or due to increased testing. These are actual numbers, because the number of hospitalizations has increased and number of death has increased. You have the power to save 70,000 lives. Just as you wear your seat-belt every time you drive, wear mask. You have freedom to run around naked, but will you do it? There is some basic common sense. If you are doing everything on your power to protect you and your loved ones, just stay away from those who refuse to do the same. You have the power. Please wear mask, social distance, wash your hands often, do not touch your face. I pray everyday that we overcome this pandemic soon, and we all are safe and healthy.

Do This Every Day for a Zenful Life

a-moment-of-zen

Hi there my lovelies! Hope you all are doing well and staying safe. Have stopped during your day just to take in your surrounding? It might sound crazy but in our daily machine-like lives, we spend majority of the time running and working like bunch of machines set out everyday to complete day-to-day jobs. However, if we just take a moment to just take in our surrounding, we can all create fulfilling lives for ours. My friends! We just need to do one thing everyday to leave a healthier life: breathe.

1_4HoWolW_J6jSona6mVGn1g

I have mentioned in my previous post, how deep breathing helped me acknowledge my anxiety and let me become more relaxed and grounded. Breathing is a very powerful mechanism that will help us find zen in our life. So, let us all take the initiative to give ourselves room to breathe, take deep breathe every day. Take your time just to take deep breathe during each of the following situation:

SimilarWeeklyGodwit-size_restricted

  1. When you wake up in the morning. It will kick start your day fresh and ready to thrive.
  2. When you are tensed take a deep breathe. It will relax you.
  3. When you are moving too fast and unable to focus, breathe. It will bring you back to the present.
  4. When you are angry, take a deep breathe. It will help you become grounded and prevent you from anything that you will regret later.
  5. When you are with your loved ones, take a deep breathe. I will help you take in the moment and capture it in our heart.

zen

My dear lovelies! Life is fleeting by fast. Let us all take deep moments to capture the various moments in life. After all, moments don’t last long.

I would love to hear your daily ritual to find zen in your life. What works for you or doesn’t work for you? Please share.

Using Personalized Design for Decor

Hi there my lovelies! Hope you all are doing well and staying safe. As I have shared with you before, I have in the process of redecorating my home without breaking my bank. Let’s face it, I am also in my journey towards financial freedom, which means penny pinching. Hence, I will be relying a lot on Dollar Tree and Dollar Stores. However, the one I am sharing with you now is through Etsy before I went on a financial diet. Today, I wanted to share with another great experience that I had with another small business owner at Etsy. I am talking about CopperFoxCompany.

20200804_123520

My beautiful lovelies! I have these wood pieces with bark as coasters. It gives a chic cottage vibe that I like. To be honest, I don’t know what my design style is. With work, life, taking care of family, I really don’t have time to focus on specific design style. All I know is that my family and I like clean lines with neutral colors. I went on to the HGTV website and took a quiz and it showed my design style is modern cottage chic. All that matters to me is that there are clean lines.

20200804_123459

That being said, with the additional of the beautiful stove top, I wanted to continue the theme. Hence, I went online to Etsy to find something personalized and had woodwork motive. I went found this store, know as CopperFoxCompany with some unique items. I found this beautiful tray with matches our coaster bark color. Hence, I went online and thanks to a promo code was able to save on my order.

The seller was very nice, and I was very impressed with the final product. I now have a very beautiful way to organize and display my coasters. It feels less cluttered. I was impressed by their service, so I decided to share it with you. They were very kind to offer me 25% promo code for my viewers and readers. Check out their other items:

I am not affiliated not CopperFoxCompany in any shape of form. I am not getting paid to promote their product. I am glad to share my good experience with you. If you like what you see please use the link here and use the promo code Allaboutme31 to receive 25% of your order. It can be great DYI project but I just don’t have that patience. I want to admire and appreciate the individuals who take their time to do such wonderful works and I want to help small business. So, please check them out. However, if you do have a chic DYI project of your own, please share, I would love to see and appreciate your talent.

7 Areas Where You Should Not Use Vinegar As a Cleaning Product.

adult building business clean

Hi there my lovelies! Hope you are doing well and staying safe. We all love working on DYI projects, who wouldn’t? It rewarding the journey itself is so meditating and satisfying. Similarly, in this world of harsh chemical and pollutants we strive hard to use natural ingredients and reduce the carbon footprint. One such ingredient is vinegar. It’s not only good in food and a great natural cleaning product. I know I love using it for cleaning. However, did you know that there are several places we should not be using vinegar? Today, I will share with your 7 such areas.

  1. Marble & Granite countertops: Using vinegar to clean your granite or marble countertops can ruin their smooth, shiny surface. The acidity in vinegar may scratch the granite top and leave a dull or discolored spot behind. ee06b4e8b0ef5d10119237b6568965b4
  2. Waxed Furniture: Using vinegar to clean your waxed furniture will dissolve the wax and leave the surface looking dull and discolored. Hence, use a wax cleaning solvent instead to maintain the surface of your furniture. Slate-Floor-Care-and-Maintenance
  3. Stone Floor Tiles: If you have natural stone tiles anywhere in your house, avoid cleaning them with vinegar, lemon, or ammonia. The acidic nature of the products etches and dulls the stone, and it may lead to a very expensive repolishing process.Egg Spill
  4. Egg Spills: Cleaning egg messes with vinegar solution will cause the protein enzymes in the egg to coagulate or clot and will make the stains even more impossible to clean up. So, if you drop egg, it is better to use just soap and warm water instead.                                                    DO-NOT-MIX
  5. Mixing with bleach: Vinegar is a great tool in washing cloth, to give it a fresh look and get rid of the musty smell from your clothes. However, BEWARE. Don’t add bleach to that mixture. Mixing vinegar and bleach creates a toxic gas which not only bad for you, it’s even worse for your clothes. Check out the list of chemicals that should never be mixed from the Family Handyman website.                   twilight-sj-_28_
  6. Hardwood Floors: According to Family Handyman, cleaning hardwood floors vinegar varies depending on the finish of your floors. Using vinegar on some hardwood floors will damage the finish. While it’s best to use a cleaner specifically designed for cleaning finished hardwood floors, if you heavily dilute the vinegar with water or other cleaning ingredients, your floors should be fine. However, if you don’t want to take that risk, a safer, DIY solution is a mixture of liquid detergent and water. That’s what I use.                                                vinegar pearl
  7. Pearls: Pearls looks beautiful and elegant and it’s made of marble, limestone, and calcium carbonate. Hence, if pearl is exposed to vinegar, the calcium carbonate in the pearl will react with the acidity in the vinegar, causing it to dissolve. In order to avoid damaging your pearls, Family Handyman recommends cleaning them with a soft cloth dipped in a solution of lukewarm water and mild dish soap.

How many of us made the mistake of cleaning the above surface with vinegar. I know I did it once, but fortunately, the surfaced was ruined in that first clean.

My dear lovelies! I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I enjoyed share it with you. I want to thank Family Handyman for the beautiful tips. I am not someone who would take credit for someone else’s work. As a scientist, my academic and ethical integrity is very important to me. What techniques have for you for daily cleaning? I would love to hear your feedback.

Hope you enjoyed my post as much I enjoyed writing it. Please leave your comments.

Hi there my lovelies! Hope you all are doing well and staying safe. Today, I will be short and ask for just one thing. You probably saw the news of Beirut Explosion that has killed 137 people and injured over 5,000.

https://www.gofundme.com/static/js/embed.js

The disaster was preceded by a large fire at the Port of Beirut, on the city’s northern Mediterranean coast. In videos posted on social media white smoke could be seen billowing from Warehouse 12, next to the port’s huge grain silos. Shortly after 18:00 (15:00 GMT), the roof of the warehouse caught alight and there was a large initial explosion, followed by a series of smaller blasts that some witnesses said sounded like fireworks going off.

About 30 seconds later, there was a colossal explosion that sent a mushroom cloud into the air and a supersonic blastwave radiating through the city.

According to BBC News,Beirut Governor Marwan Abboud said as many as 300,000 people had been made temporarily homeless and that collective losses might reach $10-15bn (£8-11bn).

Seeing this broke my heart. Hospitals, who were already dealing with the impact of COVID-19 now are overwhelmed with the victims of the explosion.

According to the Lebanese Red Cross, at the moment over 100 people died in the explosion and over 4,000 were injured in explosion at Beirut Port. Kitchen Decor: From Meh to Yeah

Hi there my lovelies home you all are doing well and staying safe. Have you looked at your kitchen and just said meh. I myself has that same problem until I saw this beautiful store in Etsy. I have seen a lot of DYI projects but I am not a crafty person with wood, I paint but am not good with wood.

I went online and ordered a wood stove top cover through Sawyer Custom Crafts . I chose a custom stove top and I thought it was it. What made me amazed how much Mr. Rick kept in touch with me regarding the progress of the order. He always kept me in the loop. I have worked with so many sellers in my life but never someone as kind and responsive as Mr. Rick. Right after the placement of the order, Mr. Rick contacted me regarding the design I wanted. He asked for specific measure in order to make sure it fits properly.

He sent me pictures along the way, and kept me informed. I cannot tell you how reassuring it was. When I received the item I was very much impressed. I loved the product I received and I am forever grateful to Mr. Rick for the beautiful final product and exceptional customer service.

My dear lovelies! If you like what you see and want to help out a small business, please check out the Sawyer Custom Crafts in Esty. Just use promo code SAWYER27 to receive 10% discount on your order. I am not affiliated the store, nor am I getting paid to promote them. I just wanted to share with you the beautiful experience I had thanks to Mr. Rick and Sawyer Custom Crafts.

Hope you enjoy the post as much as I enjoyed sharing my wonderful experience with you. I would love to hear if you had similar experience from a seller. During this time of uncertainty, it’s really nice to see the attention and care some people take in their work, and that reflects on their product.

Anxiety: The Demon Inside

Hi there my beautiful lovelies! Hope you all are doing well and staying safe. The COVID-19 pandemic has allowed me to reflect on my life and helped me to become more grounded. However, I have not been like this all my life. It took some long self-reflection and perspective change to bring me to this point. Today, I will share with about the little demon inside of me and how I finally defeated it.

screen-shot-2017-11-20-at-9-54-33-pm

If you remember, I have always mentioned my struggle with anxiety without elaborating much on the topic. However, thanks to your support I have now learned to finally stare straight at the demon and move on. I have been fighting with anxiety since I can remember; whether worrying about the worst possible outcome each time my parents went out and was running late; or having panic attacks before every midterms and finals. However, I couldn’t talk to anyone about my feeling because I grew up in a culture where mental health is a stigma. In that culture you are either insane or sane, and there are no grey areas. I was always told that I was in control of my mind and there was no such thing as depression or anxiety because we can just control them at our wills and those only exist because doctors can make money.

anxiety

With such beliefs being pushed around me, I always felt trapped inside. It felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest all the time. I could not breath. Since I could remember, I was always very skinny and prone to sickness, and was a complete introvert. It was a big struggle for me to open up to people. Little that I knew at that time that my constant sickness was a manifestation of my mental health image-20150609-10747-18vzvsiissues, which has increased my cortisol level. As a kid, I always spent my days in my own world, afraid of self-expression and opening up. I wanted to be and made myself invisible.

Anxiety mental health symbol isolated on white. Mental disorder icon design

In high school, I made friends but there has always been a part of me who kept to herself and kept everything bottled up. I could not figure out why I was so prone to panic attacks. I always thought of myself as a fizzy drink inside a tightly closed bottle, which has been shaken to the point that it will burst out at any moment. I was a prisoner inside my own self.

anxietyvsdisorder-768x768

My dear lovelies! I grew up with the thinking that everything wrong within me was my own fault. I was too stupid and cowardly to conquer whatever was going on inside. I  was trapped and was going through a period of learned helplessness, unable to find a way out and feeling trapped in my misery. It was not until my twenties when I realized how trapped I was. It was during that time, I found my answer. I was in clinical research and found out about this study helping healthcare workers, such as nurses and clinical staffs to deal with stress.

My boss was the principle investigator and asked me to join the class without enrolling as a participant. I couldn’t officially join the study, since it would been a conflict of interest and investigator bias. I just attended class every morning. It was during one of those classes that I realized how much trapped I really was inside. During one of the sessions, we were told to close our eyes, do some guided meditations, and then let our hand draw whatever it wants with our eyes closed and mind open. Consequently, that exercise opened up our right side of the brain, the more free and creative side. To be honest, I didn’t realized before this, how much I have imprisoned my right brain. We as our rational self always tend to use our left brain, which is responsible for logic, and rationality.

now-iRX16jl2-150033594jpg-1210-680

My dear lovelies! It is thought that people prefer one type of thinking over the other. For example, a person who is “left-brained” is thought to be more logical, analytical, and objective. A person who is “right-brained” is said to be more intuitive, creative, emotional, thoughtful, and subjective. My upbringing and childhood made me a complete left-brained person. It was during that guided session that I was able to bring out my right-brain from hiding. What my drawing that day showed me was eye-opening and it changed the trajectory of my life. When I opened my eyes, I saw a drawing of a girl wearing straitjackets – unable to free herself and fly. The girl had her mouth stitched shut, her eyes shut closed and she was inside a cage. When I was told to talk about my painting, I became very emotional and couldn’t stop but cry. It was the group support I received that day that opened me to a new possibility.

giphy-preview

It was for the first time I realized that what I was going through doesn’t need to be locked up inside. I could for the first start looking at it from a nonjudgmental way through the support of my peers. I was ready to begin my journey towards mindful living. Even though those sessions taught me to become more aware of myself, there was still a part of me who wanted to be locked out. The reasoning behind this was my long term belief that change is bad and hard, and keeping myself locked up would protect me from the harsh world. It was five to six more years before I learned to be nonjudgmental. What changed at that time was my six weeks of mindfulness meditation course.  I signed up for the course because I wanted to help out sick patients and their families. Little that I knew that it will help me so much instead.

What I have learned during those six weeks freed me completely. I learned to use my right brain more often and be present more in the moment. I started to enjoy not only my climbs but the who journey towards that climb. I was more appreciative of myself. Before, every hard conversation, I learned to take a deep breath to center myself. My heart started to feel lighter. I was more aware of myself, and I started to respect the person I saw in the mirror.

My dear lovelies! My life has not been always a smooth sailing since the six week course. I became caught up in life. The loss of several of my loved ones to cancer made me more anxious. I started to feel trapped again. I became, irritable, and moody. It was hard for my family to have nice conversation with me. I was slowly drifting away into the sea of misery and anxiety. I became more hopeless and judgmental about myself. I was no longer happy with the person I saw in the mirror. I started to lose everything. It was during that time I have started to take out my frustration through shopping, and before I knew it, I have racked up a hefty credit card balance, it was at that time my mom sat me down and told me to get some help. My sister was very open and supportive. It was their supports that allowed me to get some help. It was 3 years ago, when I decided to see a counselor and then go on FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) just to reflect on my life. It was then I decided to take the next step in my life, I left my work, where I worked for over 10 years. I was not happy with the person that I was becoming while I was in my third position in that company during that time. I started a new position outside for the first time in 10 plus years.

My lovelies! I cannot emphasize the value of support when it comes to dealing with anxiety and depression. It was in new position, where I found so much nurturing and support from my team. Before, I knew it, I gained 20 pounds in weight, and was trying to loose some in the process. It took a year more before I felt like myself again.

It was not until last year when I started to become overpowered by the demon again. Last year, I started a new job and was having a hard time to adjust. Before I could begin to settle down both my parents and I were in horrible car accidents weeks apart. I ended up taking a short-term disability as I recovered. I was also put on anti-anxiety medication. My beautiful lovelies, before I knew it, we were bombarded by the COVID-19 pandemic. During the same time, my mom became extremely sick with lingering pneumonia, and worsening lung damage. I was devastated-. However, I knew what to do, my daily deep breathing and became more aware of myself.

You see my lovelies! My journey with generalized anxiety syndrome has been a long one with lots of ups and downs, but it has taught me how transient life is.  What the unpredictability of the current situation taught me is that life is too short to worry about every small thing in life. If we get too caught up with what could have been and could be, we will miss out on what is out there. My journey has taught me to take a deep breath every now and then and take in the good surrounding me. I paint more and meditate. Even though I am more sleepless than ever but I am not tired. I am aware of my surroundings. I am learning every day. I may not have complete control of stress and anxiety, but at least I know to stop and tell myself “relax a little”.

Now that I am back to blogging regularly, I can pour myself in the process. My family and you keep me grounded. If I have not said this before, I am saying it now, “Thank you my beautiful lovelies. Thank you for your constant support”. I would love to hear from you and what, if any, mental health symptoms have you experienced and you are dealing/dealt with it.

Fizzy Drinks: I remember how much I used to love soda and even when I was just 90 lbs, how my stomach will swell up after drinking any fizzy drinks. According to Go With Your Gut author and nutritional eating coach Robyn Youkilis, any carbonated drink (yes, even sparking water) can cause bloating. The fizzing bubbles in carbonated drinks are actually gas, which can get trapped in your stomach and make you feel like you’ve been pumped with helium. That’s why I have eliminated fizzy drinks from my diet, and yes I have one less culprit to my extreme bloating.

Diet: There are several diets that can cause stomach bloating. Avoiding, or even eliminating those food can be really helpful in alleviating painful stomach bloating that making it harder for you to zip up those favorite jeans for the evening party. We’re talking about the temporary abdominal distention that plagues most everyone from time to time. Michael Jensen, MD, an endocrinologist and obesity researcher at Mayo Clinic, says:

“It is a myth that bloating in the stomach is from fluid accumulation in healthy adults, because the abdomen is not a place where fluids accumulate first. Instead, you would see it in your feet or ankles as long as you are upright.”

To avoid this, eat a diet high in fiber (25 grams per day for women and 38 for men) from whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds. Also, drink plenty of fluids (aim for 6-8 glasses a day). I myself try to avoid cruciferous vegetables, such as cauliflowers, cabbage, and broccoli to avoid bloating.

Lack of exercise: Aim for physical activity for at least 30 minutes, five times a week. This is where I have failed each time. As I am mentioned before, due to my chronic pain and recent accidents, many exercises are too much for me. Each time I tried doing Pilates, and plank exercise I have broken my metatarsal bones. Let just say, I am not restricted to only low impact exercise. However, thanks to a recent video that I found online, I am beginning to challenge myself to exercise more. Stay tuned to learn more about the challenge and my journey.

eatfast

Eating to quickly: Eating fast not only increases your risk of becoming overweight and obese, it’s also linked to other health problems, including: Insulin resistance. Eating too quickly is linked to a higher risk of insulin resistance, which is characterized by high blood sugar and insulin levels. It can also lead to build up of sodium in your body, which in turn lead to water retention in your body and increased bloating. Stay tuned for my mindfulness mediation post where I will discuss more about mindful eating. So slow down and enjoy your food. Your meals should last at least 30 minutes. Also, keep in mind that digestion begins in the mouth and you can decrease bloating just by chewing your food more. I am making it a habit of chewing my food 15 to 20 times before swallowing. Yes my lovelies, I have taken this from the book of Sheldon from Big Bang Theory.

Dysbiosis: It is a term for a microbial imbalance or maladaptation on or inside the body, such as an impaired microbiota. Dysbiosis may be caused by such diverse things as antibiotic or mold exposure, alcohol misuse, or inappropriate diet. Disruptions in the microbiome can allow outside factors or even pathogenic members of the microbiome to take hold in the gut environment. Dysbiosis has been reported to be associated with illnesses, such as multiple chemical sensitivity, periodontal disease, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, obesity, cancer, bacterial vaginosis, and colitis. Probiotics such as in supplement and in greek yogurts, kimchi, and kaffir to balance this microbiome and improve your gut health.

IBS: Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS, is a common disorder that affects the large intestine. Signs and symptoms include cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and diarrhea or constipation, or both. I more one has been diagnosed with IBS long time ago by my Gastroenterologist. IBS is a chronic condition that you’ll need to manage long term. Many people have worse IBS symptoms when they eat or drink certain foods or beverages, including wheat, dairy products, citrus fruits, beans, cabbage, milk and carbonated drinks. Stress can also trigger IBS symptoms. Again, stay tuned for my post on stress reduction tips.

Food Intolerance: Several food intolerance can cause heavy gas and bloating. In tolerance to wheat, lactose, and even sucrose can play a big role. I suggest keep a food diary and start with a Low FOBMAP diet (Stay tuned for the post) and add one food at a time after 6 weeks on the diet. Keep track of what foods are causing symptoms. This will sure to rout out the culprit(s).

My dear lovelies! Hope this post helps you start your journey towards the a flatter stomach. Don’t forget to come back tomorrow and find out more about my stress reduction journey, where I will share with you a special video.
