My Poem About Respect

I want to dedicated this poem those who think they are not respected in their lives no matter how hard they work. I hope you enjoy my poem. I would love to hear your feedback.

respect

Respect of Loved Ones

By Munziba Khan

 What you are good at
 Is making me feel worthless.
 Every that I do
 Is either wrong or careless.
 All I ever wanted
Is respect for me in your heart.
But all I do ever get
Is I am nothing but dirt.
I look back at my life
Looking for things I have done wrong
 But all I can find
Is timeless waiting and loneliness too long.
 Every step I took
 I looked at for courage
 But all I found
Were Eyes full of disappointment and rage.
 Now when I look ahead
 All I see is loneliness
 I see in my future
 Nothing but lousiness.
All I ask is a little bit of respect.
But all I get is disappointment and neglect.
You say respect needs to earned
But all my effort you have always spurned.
What others say to me is worthless.
But what you say to me is priceless.
I hope one you will see me for me.
But what I fear when do there will be no me.

I consider myself fortunate to have good health, a full-time job, and a roof over my head. However, there are still so many people who are struggling to put food on their tables. Please join me to help those who are struggling. If you have good health, full-time jobs, and a roof over your head, please join me to help those who are struggling. Whether you donate $5 or $500, you will make a huge difference in someone’s life.

No Kid Hungry:

America’s kids need us. The coronavirus is closing schools nationwide, and millions of vulnerable children are losing the school meals they depend on. For some, it’s the only food they’ll receive on a given day. We have a plan to feed kids, but we need your help today to continue our work to ensure every kid gets three meals a day. You can click above to donate to my gofundme page donation going directly to the organization, or you can click on the direct link to the site.

Manna Food Center:

PLEASE DONATION ANY AMOUNT YOU CAN AND SHARE THE POST WITH EVERYONE YOU KNOW.

Manna Food Center, a nonprofit organization, strives to eliminate hunger in Montgomery County through food distribution, education, and advocacy. Millions of children go to bed hungry in America every year, sadly it’s worse now! Today, 14 million children regularly miss meals — three times more than during the Great Recession and five times more than before the pandemic.

Many parents have lost their job during the pandemic. Sadly, that shows no sign of stopping. Your donation can bring relief to the millions worried about where their next meal will come from. It’s even worse for Latino and Black families, whose rates of nutrition insecurity have spiked to 25% and 30%. In the world’s wealthiest country, this is unconscionable.

Even before the pandemic, the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated 37 million people in America struggled with hunger and nutrition. The Centers for Disease Control reports 76% of people killed by COVID-19 had at least one underlying condition, most of which were diet-related. Diet-related diseases also fuel skyrocketing health care costs, which rose from 5% to 28% of the federal budget in the past 50 years.

Let’s make the world better, kinder, brighter. Every dollar you give will create real change. $1 will feed 5 hungry children here in the US, but $1,000 will feed 50,000 starving children overseas. Be the good in the lives of many by giving right now.

self-awareness

The Benefits of Self-Awareness

Hi there my beautiful lovelies! Hope you guys are doing well and staying safe. Today, I will talk to about something very important, self-awareness. It’s very important in my life, and thank to it, I was able to get the help I need much earlier than before.

What is Self-Awareness?

Self-Awareness is described as “conscious knowledge of one’s own character, feelings, motives, and desires”. It is the experience of one’s own personality or individuality. It should not to be confused with consciousness in the sense of qualia. While consciousness is being aware of one’s environment and body and lifestyle, self-awareness is the recognition of that awareness. Self-awareness is how an individual consciously knows and understands their own character, feelings, motives, and desires.

Types of Self-Awareness:

There are two broad categories of self-awareness: internal self-awareness and external self-awareness according to Dr. Tasha Eurich of Harvard Business Review. For the last 50 years, researchers have used varying definitions of self-awareness. For example, some see it as the ability to monitor our inner world, whereas others label it as a temporary state of self-consciousness. Still others describe it as the difference between how we see ourselves and how others see us. Tasha Eurich, PhD, is an organizational psychologist, researcher, and New York Times bestselling author. She is the principal of The Eurich Group, a boutique executive development firm that helps companies—from start-ups to the Fortune 100—succeed by improving the effectiveness of their leaders and teams. Her newest book, Insight, delves into the connection between self-awareness and success in the workplace.

Internal Self-Awareness:

Internal self-awareness represents how clearly we see our own values, passions, aspirations, fit with our environment, reactions (including thoughts, feelings, behaviors, strengths, and weaknesses), and impact on others. We’ve found that internal self-awareness is associated with higher job and relationship satisfaction, personal and social control, and happiness; it is negatively related to anxiety, stress, and depression.

External Self-Awareness:

According to Dr. Eurich, external self-awareness means understanding how other people view us, in terms of those same factors listed above. Our research shows that people who know how others see them are more skilled at showing empathy and taking others’ perspectives. For leaders who see themselves as their employees do, their employees tend to have a better relationship with them, feel more satisfied with them, and see them as more effective in general.

Dr. Eurich’s group has identified identify four leadership archetypes, each with a different set of opportunities to improve:

self-awareness

The bottom line is that self-awareness isn’t one truth according to Dr. Eurich. It’s a delicate balance of two distinct, even competing, viewpoints.

Available Research on Self-Awareness Theory:

This theory has been around for several decades, giving researchers plenty of time to test its soundness. The depth of knowledge on self-awareness, its correlates, and its benefits can provide us with a healthy foundation for enhancing self-awareness in ourselves and others. Self-Awareness Theory (and subsequent research on it) suggests that there are a couple of different factors that influence how we choose to respond. Basically, it comes down to how we think it will turn out; if we believe there’s little chance of actually changing this discrepancy, we tend to avoid it. If we believe it’s likely that we can improve our alignment with our standards of correctness, we take action. When faced with a significant discrepancy that will take a lot of consistent and focused work, we often simply don’t bother and stick to avoiding self-evaluation on this particular discrepancy.

Further, our level of self-awareness interacts with the likelihood of success in realigning ourselves and our standards to determine how we think about the outcome. Conversely, when we are self-aware but believe there is a low chance of success, we tend to think that the outcome is more influenced by external factors than our efforts (Silvia & Duval, 2001). It’s clear from the research on self-awareness that it is an important factor at play in how we think, how we feel, and how we act–and how we react to our thoughts, feelings, and actions.

4 Proven Benefits of Self-Awareness:

Now, let’s shift our attention to research on the outcomes of being self-aware. There are many benefits to practicing self-awareness:

  1. It can make us more proactive, boost our acceptance, and encourage positive self-development (Sutton, 2016).
  2. Self-awareness allows us to see things from the perspective of others, practice self-control, work creatively and productively, and experience pride in ourselves and our work as well as general self-esteem (Silvia & O’Brien, 2004).
  3. It leads to better decision-making (Ridley, Schutz, Glanz, & Weinstein, 1992).
  4. It can make us better at our jobs, better communicators in the workplace, and enhance our self-confidence and job-related wellbeing (Sutton, Williams, & Allinson, 2015).

The benefits listed are reason enough to work on improving self-awareness, but this list is by no means thorough. Self-awareness has the potential to enhance virtually every experience you have, as it’s a tool and a practice that can be used anywhere, anytime, to ground yourself in the moment, realistically evaluate yourself and the situation, and help you make good choices.

In a future post I will discuss the ways you can improve self-awareness.

My Poem About COVID-19.

I want to dedicated this poem to the past year and loved ones we lost to coronavirus, COVID-19. I hope you enjoy my poem. I would love to hear your feedback.

A Year With COVID-19

By Munziba Khan

It has been year since the beginning
Of the pandemic and the world started spinning.
As a student of public health
It’s something that I studied before
But the reality was so much dire
That it shook me to the core.
The world stopped moving and life stood still
But the virus kept moving rapidly
 With a vengeance to kill.
We called it COVID-19, a coronavirus.
It came with a vengeance to control our iris.
COVID-19 tested our patience to the extreme
And only path to defeating it
Was for the world fighting as a team.
The battle to defeat the virus
Was fought with diligence and sacrifice.
But the politics leadership became a hindrance
And displayed the fact that our world is in a vice.
People wore masks and social distanced.
Even in the presence of COVID-19 fatigues and resistant.
 COVID-19 infected and killed millions,
 Worst pandemic in a century.
The frontline workers sacrificed so much,
And kept us safe, thanks to their bravery.
We lost loved ones suffer and even die.
 Suffering alone in isolation,
Without a chance to say goodbye.
Through the darkness of the virus
Came the fruits of working with collaboration and vigor.
We saw the rapid discoveries of effective vaccines,
A breakthrough thanks to the scientific rigor.
 With a hope for immunity,
 People desperately seeks the vaccines.
But distribution is a constant nightmare,
Leaving us frustrated with patience beginning to wean.
But let us not forget our lost loved ones
The lost partner, friends, parents, grandparents
 And daughters and sons.
Their loss is tragic, leaving wholes in our heart.
We ache in sorrow and pain,
Holding on to the memories that our love ones impart.
As we look towards a time of normalcy
When we will all be together on society that thrives.
Let us not let COVID fatigue control our lives.
More sacrifices and patients are needed
So let us be diligent and not be conceded.
As together, we will be stronger.
 And will so defeat COVID-19
And will not be distant from loved ones any longer.

10 Things You Should Do or Don’t Do to Protect Wet Hair

Do you worry about your hair and how to protect it the best? It’s a constant struggle of mine. This especially true for me because I suffer from androgenic alopecia and hair loss and need to be on medication. I avoid heat as much as possible, but if I decide to use it I make sure that I use a heat protectant. Additionally, I make sure that I protect my hair when it’s wet.

Wet Hair:

wet hair

Our hair is fragile, and it’s easy to forget that. This is especially true when we spend so much time dying styling it without much worry. However, our hair is especially sensitive after we get out of the shower, and there are a number of things you should never do to wet hair. You might be okay to use your curling wand on blow-dried hair, but using heating products on wet hair is a whole other story. Most of us already know that excessive heat can make our hair more fragile, but few truly understand that it’s when our hair is wet that it is most vulnerable.

The ABC’s of Wet Hair:

Our hair might look like thousands of singular strands arranged all over our heads. Nonetheless, the truth lies at the granular level. Each individual hair shaft is made up of keratin, a protein, and composed of bonds. Such bonds, such as the hydrogen bonds are weaker when they are wet, as opposed to when they are dry. As a result, when your hair is wet, it stretches—and if manipulated too harshly, any weak points on the cuticles can snap. This goes for any hair type. In addition, those with ultra-fine, coarse, or chemically-treated or lightened hair need to be the most careful when manipulating wet strands. Whenever your hair is wet, it is more fragile, especially if you have color-treated or chemically-treated hair. Besides, unlike dry hair, wet hair is more delicate to anything it touches.

Taking the proper precautions when your hair is wet can help protect the health of your hair, which will ultimately lead to stronger, healthier, and more full-looking locks. To make sure your hair isn’t going through any unnecessary breakage, avoid these eight things you should never do when your hair is wet. As a result, in order to protect hair in the vulnerable stage, the following 10 steps should or shouldn’t be done to protect wet hair.

1.  Reduce Friction:

It’s recommended to sectioning wet hair into six parts and then towel dry or blow-drying each section so that you are decreasing the amount of tension and friction that is being applied to your fragile strands.

2.  Wait a minute to apply styling products after washing your hair:

If your hair is soaking wet, wait until it’s a little drier to use anti-frizz serums and/or styling oils like Dove Nourishing Oil Care Anti-Frizz Serum so they can penetrate into the hair shaft. Hair absorbs better when it’s slightly dry.

3. Dry your hair with a towel shammy:

A towel shammy is much more gentle, and all good styles start with how you treat your hair from the beginning.

4. Detangling Wet Hair:

Most of us reach for the detangling brush post-shower. However, it better to tackle knots before you bathe—and letting your hair partially dry afterward before running a comb through it.  Moreover, I always brush my hair before the shower, when it’s dry, to get the knots out. Brushing it out when it’s dry will decrease the likelihood of breakage when working out the tougher tangles created throughout the day or night, depending on when you plan to shower. Your hair can get even more tangled when it is wet, specifically during the shampoo process, causing more breakage and excessive shedding. When combing, whether before your shower or after your hair has partially dried, it is important to work your way from the ends up to your roots—never the other way around.

5. Wait Until Your Hair is 90% Dry:

Don’t brush your hair when it’s wet. If you find yourself with a lot of tangles, it’s best to go with a Wet Brush and leave-in spray. The bristles are much softer on a wet brush than a regular, everyday hairbrush. Try rough drying your hair first (about 90 percent) and then using a round brush to smooth rather than detangle. I for one use a wide comb and a leave-in detangler to protect my hair.

6. Avoid Styling Wet Hair:

It’s tempting to style your hair before it’s completely dry but avoid it at all costs. Never flat iron or curl with an iron on wet hair. You are just frying your hair and creating damaged, dull hair.  All that heat will pretty much boil the water on your hair—you’re basically cooking your hair—not something you want to do.

7. Don’t Use A Lot of Products in Wet Hair:

Wet hair and loads of your favorite product are like oil and water — they don’t mix. When you blow-dry wet hair, the heat melts the product and weighs down the strands, making your hair too heavy to style. Only use heat protectant product on wet hair if you are using a blow-dry. However, don’t blow dry dripping wet hair. Blow drying dripping wet hair will just take longer. Hair takes its shape from damp to dry, so I usually tell people to either towel dry it really well or tell people to let it air dry a little.

8. Don’t Handle Hair Roughly:

Protecting wet hair is more about how you handle your hair versus what you use to dry it. Some people believe a cotton T-shirt is the best thing to use, and there are lots of fancy towels out there. I don’t think it’s as much what you use as to how you use it. You don’t want to rough up your hair—rather than rubbing, gently squeeze the moisture out.

9. Putting it up in a bun or ponytail when it’s really wet:

Hair’s elasticity changes as it goes from wet to dry—essentially, the hair shrinks as it dries. If you try to put it up with a ponytail holder when it’s wet, it can break at the band. If you’re desperate to put it up before it’s dry, it’s best to use hair pins or a clip.

10. Don’t Go to Bed With Wet Hair:

We all need to get our beauty rest, but if you choose to do so with wet hair, expect to wake up to matting and tangling in the morning. Hair should be dried before you go to bed no matter how tempted you are to get some shut-eye.

The Traumatic Event

Today, watching the impeachment trial has brought back so much of the worst memories. The impeachment managers showed security videos that were not seen before were traumatic. What the January insurrection did to me can be described as horrendous at best. The pain and trauma can’t be explained in any words.

Why is it so traumatic for me?

traumatic

Because I saw some of the groups in DC. I was in a downtown DC hotel that week. I was scared that I would get COVID from them since they don’t follow any of the COVID protection guidelines. I felt scared for myself and my family.

pentagon
I saw that smoke with my own eyes.

My friends, that close encounter took me back to the horrific attack of 9/11. As a teenager, I was in downtown Washington DC. I watched the flames coming out of the Pentagon. I watched fighter planes in the sky of Washington D.C. for the first time in my life. I still can’t look at the sight of a plane flying behind any building.

Since the January Capitol attack, I have been suffering from insomnia, nightmare, high heart rate, higher than my normal base rate of low 100s. I am scared. Yes, my friends, I am suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD. I have seen a professional and I am working hard to take myself out of the hump. I am not giving up. I have tried meditation, mindfulness, yoga, but when nothing helped I have taken the initiative to get professional help. That my friend is new for me. I have learned to take action to get help when needed.

Food Bank of Maryland:

Natasha Denona Trichrome Palette : A Review

What is Natasha Denona Trichrome Palette?

Trichrome

Natasha Denona Triochrome 15-Pan Eyeshadow Palette ($129.00 for 1.2 oz.) is a new, limited edition palette that’s centered around three, Multichrome eyeshadows (the third column!). As the name suggests, it is a palette with three different pressed-pigment, multi-chrome shades in the center of each row and their complementary tones to complete a makeup look. This palette provides maximum color payoff with minimal effort, blending seamlessly to create vibrant, ultra-pigmented, long-lasting looks. These resplendent shades can be used for playfully-bold creations or effortlessly-wearable everyday looks.

What’s in the Trichrome Palette?

The Trichrome Palette is paraben and cruelty-free. In addition, the palette contains 15 eyeshadows. The eyeshadows are: Scrap (cool dusty army green) , Andradite (pastel mint), Scarab (poison green / warm gold / blue), Ion (acid green) , Vert (vibrant mustard), Naga (pastel lavender), Manganese (vibrant eggplant), Kinetic (purple / pink / muted green), Redox (dusty lilac), Tungsten (toasted mauve), Vertex (cool Ivory), Plutonium (burnt mandarine), Color flip (fuchsia / nude / dusty green), Garmon (peachy taupe), Diatonic (vibrant light coral) .

Swatches:

As you can see it is opaque even after 3 layers.

Looks:

The Verdict:

I don’t think that the palette is worth the hefty $129. The matte eyeshadows had semi-opaque to opaque, buildable pigmentation with lightly powdery, though blendable, consistencies; they were less substantial and a bit thinner compared to the brand’s matte formula, generally. It required a lot of layering in order to get the same consistency. Furthermore, there were a lot of fall off. Only 3 of the 15 shades are actually “trichrome” and the rest are sort of odd color story matte’s. I would not recommend wasting $129 for this palette. To me it’s mediocre at best.

Let It Snow

snow

I wake up to fluffy, white snow covering everything outside. I have been overcome by a feeling of euphoria. What is a beautiful magical view!!! The fluffy snow playing with the naked branches stripped of its leaves by the cold winter. The groundhog has peaked out last week but the snow is not done with us yet. It’s here to let us know, I am here and I am ready to spread the warmth of the cold winter. The magic is here. The holidays might be over, but the magic brought on by the beautiful snow is still here. Today’s snow is not wet and heavy, but fluffy and soft like the snuggle bunny ready to play. I am ready. As I enjoy the winter wonderland outside my window. I will leave you with a favorite song of mine along with my favorite snow poem.

Let It Go!!

Snow Poem

Stopping by the Woods On a Snow Evening

By Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Simiplicity

Simplicity – The Medicine for Complex Time

Have you have ever thought about going back to simplicity when it comes to surviving a pandemic, or traumatic situation? That’s exactly what I did, and that has made a huge difference.

What is Simplicity:

simplicity
My artwork of the pandemic period. All copyright reserved.

According to the dictionary, simplicity is “the quality or condition of being easy to understand or do.”

During the complete shutdown period at the beginning of the pandemic, it was depressive at best. Then, I asked myself what would my childhood self do in that situation? The answer was simpler than I realized. My childhood version would spend hours drawing. I would actually immerse myself in my drawing. I wasn’t much of a TV person. Growing up with ADHD, I get lost on something that would be given. Yes, I would get easily distracted, but drawing gave me the chance to get lost in myself.

Hence during the pandemic, and during the craziest and hardest times of my life, simplicity came to my rescue. The simple act of drawing was my savior. Each time I drew it took me into a world of imagination. It made me feel free and liberated. For someone with anxiety and PSTD, the simple art of drawing was my escape.

Have you chosen simplicity during times of hardship? Whether building with lego sets, drawing, reading, or anything else, it’s the key to our mental freedom. I look forward to your comments.

My Poem About Beautiful New Day

I want to dedicated this poem to the beautiful dawn. I hope you enjoy my poem. I would love to hear your feedback.

“The morning is good because we remember that no matter what went wrong the previous days, we just got a perfect opportunity to rewrite history and do better.”

– Anonymous
A new day

A Beautiful New Dawn.

By Munziba Khan

I look at the sky, and see hints of color
It’s a start of a brand new day
 That’s like no other.
What was once dark, soon will be light
Bringing in new hope, pleasant and bright.
Soon the sun will come bright and shining
And will spread it golden glow
 With its beautiful light.
It’s a new beginning, a fresh new start
Bringing new song of hope, in every heart.
The darkness of yesterday will soon fade away
What was kept unsaid, you can now say.
I move the curtains and take few deep breaths.
With my morning Joe in hand,
 I admire nature’s beautiful depths.
There’s flicks of orange, gray, and gold,
In the new dawn’s sky that’s beautiful and bold.
 Washing off failures of yesterday,
And bring in new dreams and gift of today.
The pearly golden ray, tenderly kiss my face.
I take in everything that’s good
 With heart full of grace.
I bask myself in the morning sun,
 A gentle supernova like none.
Morning marks the end of yesterday,
And beginning of a wonderful new day.
I start my day with gratitude for me and others.
 Since tomorrow is not promised,
I may not get a chance another.
I listen to what being said with my senses and my soul
I listen to the melodies of morning bird,
And let the sweet smell of glowing flowers, saturate my soul.
I leave the house, and let the dewy morning feel my heart.
Ready for what’s to come, ready to leave my mark.

My Poem About Being Lonely

I want to dedicated this poem feeling lonely. To those who feel lonely: You are not alone. Their is always help. Life may seem hard and out of control, but if we all work together there is nothing we can stop. Please don’t feel despair. The help is here, all you have to do is ask.

  • Lonely

Lonely Woman

By Munziba Khan

She looks ahead and sees no end
To the vast horizon in front of her
Which is now her only friend.
She looks to the left and looks to the left
And sees the setting sun’s ray of which she’s bereft.
Loneliness is her other friend
That is how she feels
Drowned with cloud of sadness
It’s the company of someone that her heart appeals.
With deep ocean of despair, she feels numb
Lonely, lost, and frightened,
Describe what her life has become.
Her courage is going dim,
Her strength is melting.
Like the darkness of the winter grim,
There’s no word that may be helping.
It’s dark but she does not care
The lonely night is filled with so much sorrow
That her heart can’t bear.
The sea of emotions fills her eyes with tears.
It is the darkness, which is what she fears.
She starts walking down the hill,
Waiting for the night, so quite so still.
